A rooftop that doesn’t look down, but up and out at its city, Java’s interior design seeks to embody Lisbon's relaxed, egalitarian spirit. To the south, the wraparound terrace looks down upon the iconic Ribeira Market and out to the azure of the Tagus River. Behind, Lisbon’s iconic orange roof tiles scramble up and over one another to form the city’s seven hills, a patchwork design reflected in the terracotta tiles of Java’s double-sided bar.

The interior is a blend of international influences and Portuguese design craft. Huge horseshoe booths upholstered in velvet invite friends to bunch in. But for a generation seeking home-from-home, there is a refinement that foregrounds playfulness and comfort over luxury. A key design intent for an interior with such a breathtaking vista was that every seat, every nook, have a share of the view. This approach sought to breathe a sense of collectivism into the space, and back out to the city that inspired it.
