The traditional Lisbon tasca is a dark and modest sanctuary from the hot, Portuguese streets. And even in Lisbon’s Intendente neighbourhood, where the streets hum with restless energy, the Atlantic breeze finds its way inside to cool and soothe. Palma Cantina’s design meets these unwritten rules and then sets about becoming something quite special. Far from being modest, the interiors are characterised by rich, red velvet banquettes and golden lamps imbuing quiet luxury. Meanwhile, the tactility of the rough adobe walls evoke the warm simplicity of a Mexican taqueria in Portugal.
Outside, Palma Cantina opens its arms to the vibrant Praça de Intendente, where Lisbon’s locals congregate day and night. Tables spread out from the traditionally designed tile facade, and a mix of chairs and benches place the terrace in conversation with the praça. It was designed as a place to begin a slow morning over coffee or pile inside late at night for rounds of cocktails. Like life, Palma is what you make it.
